چکیده

Structural health monitoring is a critical requirement in many composites. Numerous monitoring strategies rely on measurements of temperature or strain (or both), however these are often restricted to point-sensing or to the coverage of small areas. Spatially-continuous data can be obtained with optical fiber sensors. In this work, we report high-resolution distributed Brillouin sensing over standard fibers that are embedded in composite structures. A phase-coded, Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (B-OCDA) protocol was employed, with spatial resolution of 2 cm and sensitivity of 1 °K or 20 micro-strain. A portable measurement setup was designed and assembled on the premises of a composite structures manufacturer. The setup was successfully utilized in several structural health monitoring scenarios: (a) monitoring the production and curing of a composite beam over 60 h; (b) estimating the stiffness and Young's modulus of a composite beam; and (c) distributed strain measurements across the surfaces of a model wing of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The measurements are supported by the predictions of structural analysis calculations. The results illustrate the potential added values of high-resolution, distributed Brillouin sensing in the structural health monitoring of composites.

Full-Scale Prestress Loss Monitoring of Damaged RC Structures Using Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Technology

For the safety of prestressed structures, prestress loss is a critical issue that will increase with structural damage, so it is necessary to investigate prestress loss of prestressed structures under different damage scenarios. Unfortunately, to date, no qualified techniques are available due to difficulty for sensors to survive in harsh construction environments of long service life and large...

Measurement Range Enlargement in Brillouin Optical Correlation Domain Analysis Using Multiple Correlation Peaks

So far, Brillouin scattering based sensors have been studied as promising technology for a distributed temperature or strain measurement in structural health monitoring [1-10]. Intrinsically, Brillouin scattering is an effect caused by acoustic vibrations in the medium when laser light travels in a medium such as an optical fiber. Since the sound wave is traveling, light is also subjected to a ...

Spatially resolved measurement of chromatic dispersion and Brillouin shift along single-mode optical fibers

We present a new technique for simultaneous measurement of chromatic dispersion and Brillouin shift distribution along conventional, single-mode optical fibers used in telecommunications. It is based on performing Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) over the four-wave mixing generated by two low-power pumps (<10 mW). Unlike others, this technique can measure any arbitrary value ofdis...

High-resolution long-reach distributed Brillouin sensing based on combined time-domain and correlation-domain analysis.

A new scheme for distributed Brillouin sensing of strain and temperature in optical fibers is proposed, analyzed and demonstrated experimentally. The technique combines between time-domain and correlation-domain analysis. Both Brillouin pump and signal waves are repeatedly co-modulated by a relatively short, high-rate phase sequence, which introduces Brillouin interactions in a large number of ...

Proposal of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR).

We propose a Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR), which can measure the distribution of strain and/or temperature along an optical fiber from a single end, by detecting spontaneous Brillouin scattering with controlling the interference of continuous lightwaves. In a pulse-based conventional Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR), it is difficult in principle ...
